Tiziano Mazzoni, Piemonte

The Estate

The Mazzoni family owns vineyards in the Ghemme Docg and Colline Novaresi Doc area since the early 20th century, but it is certain – based on documents available in the Torino national archives - that they were growers since the beginning of 16th century. Tiziano and his son Gilles decided to bottle their crop from vintage 1999. They own 4.50 hectares of vineyards, 80% nebbiolo, the rest being Vespolina, Uva Rara and Erbaluce. Half of the vineyards belong to the Ghemme Docg, on the river Sesia valley facing south-west at about 250 meters above sea level, on slightly clayous alluvial, glacial soils while the rest is in the Colline Novaresi doc on pebbly, limous soils. The Ghemme vineyards have been planted in 1978, the rest around year 2000. All the vineyards are Guyot trained with density of approximately 4000 vines per ha and yields ranging between 20 and 30 Hl/ha depending on the place and grape variety.

Wine is all about place. Great positions and traditional viticulture, conceived not as a mere replication of the past, but as an optmization of centuries of experiences.
